Smart about Text Features (with a freebie)

October 9, 2013
This week, I have been focusing on introducing text features to my kiddos. The skill with our reading series has them finding facts and details from the text features but it’s kinda hard to do if they don’t know what a text feature is.
On Monday, we read a book from Bookflix (by Scholastic) and found the text features in the book. We made a chart with my text feature cards and listed why each feature is important. Please excuse my messy writing!
We went over a few more text features on Tuesday and I used Scholastic Storia and showed them a book on the iPad. I absolutely love Storia for reading books to the kids because they can see the text right in front of them.
Today, we did a text feature scavenger hunt in partners to look for text features in nonfiction books.
The kids each used a separate nonfiction book that were on their levels.

We used some of the series below.

Here is the page we used for the text features scavenger hunt.

Tomorrow, we are doing a Write the Room activity to review. We will be playing a board game on Friday for a fun activity.

Have a great night friends! I’m off to rest my eyes. My right contact bothered me all day. One day I’m gonna be smart enough to keep a spare pair of contacts in my purse. Anyone had lasik surgery? I’m really considering it because my contacts have been driving me crazy.

  1. Thanks for sharing the text features activity. I do know several people who have had Lasik and had success with it. Me, I love my glasses because they camouflage the big bags under my eyes.

  2. I had LASIK a few years ago. Love it! No more itchy eyes, no more taking off my contacts an hour after I got to school, and no more pain whenever the wind blew something into my eye. It's totally worth it! This pack looks great!
